Description

Conch variable in relative width (W/D, 0.5–0.9) and umbilical diameter (Umax/D, 0.3–0.8). Suture has 12 lobes, 7 external; 3 umbilical elements (U2 U1 U3 ) are fully isolated; U2 subequal to or larger in area than U1 , both external; U 3 internal and subequal to U1 . Sutural formula: (V1 V1 )LU2 U1 :U3 ID [Russian], (E1 Em E1 )ALv Lm Ld UI [German]. Thirty-seven named species. [Several new species of metalegoceratid have been described (zhao & zheng, 1977) from the Hutang Formation (Roadian–Wordian) of southern China (Jiangxi) and referred to Metalegoceras. They represent the basis for extending the range of the subfamily above the Baigendzhinian, although some aspects of both morphology and occurrence remain unclear.]
